Winners of the inaugural CLANZ-Bell Gully Scholarship & Prize for in-house counsel and senior law students were announced at a champagne reception at Bell Gully's Wellington offices today.
The winner of the CLANZ-Bell Gully Scholarship 2002 is Elizabeth Rinckes,
Senior Legal Counsel for AXA New Zealand, based in Wellington. Elizabeth
receives a $5000 scholarship package, which she plans to use for a legal
or management course related to the financial services industry.
Sarah Ongley, Senior Solicitor at the Ministry for the Environment
in Wellington, was named runner-up, receiving an award of $500.
The winner of the CLANZ-Bell Gully Prize 2002 for senior law students
is Katherine Dick, currently in her fifth year of studies for an
LLB and BA in English at Canterbury University in Christchurch. Katherine
receives a $1000 prize.
CLANZ President Ron Pol said "the CLANZ-Bell Gully Scholarship
was established to support the professional development of in-house counsel
in New Zealand. This is particularly important as companies focus on corporate
governance failures around the world.
"We hope that the CLANZ-Bell Gully Scholarship is one part of a process that helps the professional development of an important section of New Zealand's business community, and helps facilitate the development of best practice in New Zealand, and from New Zealand."
"We were delighted at the number of entries," added David Flacks, Bell Gully Senior Partner and judging panel member. "The CLANZ-Bell Gully Prize was established to complement the study of law by senior students - particularly to encourage them to consider legal issues specifically from the perspective of clients, whether corporate or government clients. I am confident that this year's winners will make the most of this opportunity."
