Bell Gully's work for Government and corporate clients on significant deals last year has the firm named as a finalist in the ALB Australasian Law Awards 2009.
The annual awards recognise the contribution of the New Zealand and Australian legal industries to significant deals in the preceding calendar year.
Bell Gully was yesterday confirmed as a finalist in four categories: New Zealand Dealmaker of the Year, New Zealand Deal Team of the Year, Energy and Resources Deal of the Year and Debt Market Deal of the Year.
Corporate partner and Wellington office chairman Chris Gordon is a finalist for the Dealmaker Award, recognising his leadership and role in assisting local and offshore clients with major transactions in 2008, many of them within the infrastructure and energy sectors.
His work and that of the wider Bell Gully corporate/M&A team sees it in the running for the Deal Team of the Year – an award won previously by the team.
The work of Bell Gully partner Simon Watt and senior associate Kate Radka in advising the Governor of Aceh Province on a major carbon transaction to avoid deforestation has the firm named as a finalist for the Energy and Resources Deal of the Year.
Bell Gully partner Murray King's work advising Rank Group on all financing aspects of its acquisition of Alcoa Inc's consumer packaging business has the firm named as a finalist for the Debt Market Deal of the Year. The deal – which involved co-ordinating financial close in 18 jurisdictions across Europe, Asia and North and South America – was a truly global transaction in which Bell Gully played a lead role.
The awards will be announced at a ceremony in Sydney on 21 May.
